Study break

by Victoria Nguyen

Things are starting to get hectic around here, y’all! College life is officially upon us and everything is in full swing. I just wanted — more like needed — to take a quick break from studying biology to share some information with you guys.

Like most of you, I had to take my first college exams last week. The intensity leading up to these crucial tests, being as we don’t get but three of them a semester, was insane. I was a nervous wreck last week, not because I wasn’t prepared, but because I was not sure of what to expect. I’m the type of person who likes to be in control and who likes to know every single detail that goes into something, and for me to have no remote idea of what to expect on these tests really jumbled my nerves. Fortunately for me, as soon as I received those dreaded tests, I felt at ease and allowed my prepared mind to go forth and tackle the assignment.

I don’t know about you guys, but studying was a completely new aspect for me. In high school, I was blessed enough to be able to retain information without hardly ever having to study. College is an entirely new ballgame and I personally can’t go into it with the same strategy as before. I was able to pick up some study tips here and there and adjusted fairly easily to the study life. The small things really do make the difference. For instance, I went outside with my book and read the required chapter in the sun to keep from falling asleep. Don’t use the excuse of not having time to study like I used to. I have even started bringing my study materials with me while I get my laundry done. There’s always time. It’s up to you to find it and utilize it to the best of your ability.

SLAC is a great place to get help on subjects that are giving you trouble.

Thanks to an extra credit assignment from my University Seminar class, my eyes were open to the amazing resource of SLAC. It’s really great and super helpful so I suggest that if you are having trouble with any subject, that you make your way over there for some one-on-one assistance.

Last thing, as I’m sure you know, registration for the spring semester is only a few weeks away. For those of us who weren’t aware of that, registration opens up on October 9. I just made my appointment for the PACE advising center today, and they are filling up fast. My appointment is already two weeks after registration opens, but I still suggest you make an appointment if you want the help. I’m still not a thousand percent sure what classes my major requires, so I did a little research on it and found a handy-dandy guide on the marketing page of the Texas State University website. If you guys are as clueless as I am, I would suggest looking up a degree plan via your department’s website.

I hope that this information is helpful to all of you and I hope that everything is going smoothly. I can just tell that its going to be a long week, so stay strong and keep focused. Best wishes and great success to everybody!
