Dream job for the day

by Nicholas Laughlin

One of my favorite things about Texas State is the location. We are a quick 30-minute drive to Austin, and about 45 minutes to San Antonio (all depending on traffic, of course). With that, there are so many opportunities for me as a broadcast journalism major, just north and south of our campus.Processed with VSCOcam with b3 preset

I am currently enrolled in Careers In Media. For this class, I am required to do a job shadow. This was something I was really excited about because I have always wanted to see a journalist in his or her element. I am a huge fan of KUT, The Texas Tribune, and most Austin media (television and other news outlets). I decided to go out on a limb and e-mail KUT about a chance to job shadow with someone in the newsroom. After a couple of weeks of waiting, I got an e-mail from the “Morning Edition” host, Jennifer Stayton, who was excited for me to come down to the station and follow her for the day.

I was at KUT almost all day. I arrived at 8 a.m. to sit in on the first hour of “Morning Edition,” then attended the 9 a.m. news meeting. After that I got to tour the studio, which is relatively new and very nice; listen in on “Texas Standard,” a program that broadcasts all over the state; and go out into the field with a reporter.

I was nervous, of course, because I wasn’t actually sure what I was getting into. Once I sat in the studio and watched Ms. Stayton anchor the news, I realized it was something I could see myself doing. Everyone I met was extremely nice and wanted me get the most out of my experience. I got to take part in a lot of different aspects of KUT.

I learned a lot of this experience. It was an awesome opportunity to get to be a broadcast journalist for the day. In the six hours I was there, I learned a lot about the field of radio journalism, and I am so glad that I had the opportunity to do so!

Job fairs = cool

by Alexus Moreno

This week I took it upon myself to not be lazy and attend the Mass Communication job fair, and let me tell you … it was such a great experience. I applaud Texas State greatly for putting together these job fairs (that seem to happen a few times every month); they are so beneficial. Even if you aren’t looking for a job yet, I still highly suggest attending at least one job fair.

Texas State and everyone who is a part of this university gives the students here so many opportunities to shine. Everywhere you turn, there is guaranteed to be an opportunity waiting for you just around the corner. It’s just up to you to look for it and be up for the challenge. Continue reading

Almost the weekend!

by Nicholas Laughlin

Today I did my first load of laundry in college. Yes, I did laundry by myself at home, but it was different because this was in college. I’m not exactly sure where I’m going with this but it was an achievement. That fact that I actually got out of bed and did my laundry before my 12:30 class is pretty much amazing.

I was reading through my other fellow bloggers’ posts and one thing stuck out to me in one of Astrid’s posts. I haven’t been exposed to anyone being rude. Everyone smiles at you; holds open doors, and is all-around friendly. It feels like everyone knows each other and that this school is a family.

Sitting in my Intro to Mass Communication class today made me realize how excited I am to learn more about mass media, and how this seems like the right major for me. The discussion and lecture that we had today was really interesting. Our professor really made us think how the media portrays certain races, and how those can be changed or how they live on.

I am really excited that I only have two classes on Friday because I am ready to relax and hang out at the river. Not to mention that there’s a women’s soccer game on Friday night, and the first football game of the season is on Saturday! This weekend will be packed with lots of sports and hopefully lots of floating the river.

I am exhausted and really having a hard time coming up with things to write about. I am going to sleep and will hopefully get up in time to go to Commons and get a waffle because I have been craving one all week (and maybe a donut as well).
