Sometimes even after completing a semester or two, students still don’t know what it is exactly they want to study. I don’t blame them. It’s a big decision. It’s like what you pick is what you’ll be doing for the rest of your life, and how do you know if you’re going to love it or not? I hear stories about people changing their major five times, people who are in their second year of college and are still undecided. And there is nothing wrong with that. Eventually yes…you’ll want to have made up your mind, but college is a time where you learn about yourself and your preferences.
I write about this because I recently changed my major. I was sooooo sure coming into college that I wanted to be a journalist major. I was dead set on it and there was no changing my mind. However, it is amazing to see how things can change in a split second. After taking a few classes in the School of Mass Communication, I realized journalism might not be exactly what I am looking for. I began to research and learned more about what the school of mass comm has to offer and I came to the conclusion that public relations would be the best fit for me. Right now I’m dead set on this, and I love everything that goes into public relations and I’m enjoying my classes. I definitely see a future for me with this major. Who knows, it may change…but for now I am happy with this decision.
For those of you who are undecided or are thinking about changing your major, my advice to you is this: Make sure it’s something you love. There is a lot of talk about what majors make the most money, but don’t let that affect your decision. If you are doing something you love, you’ll find a way to get money. Don’t choose a major that will make you miserable…you don’t want to look back at your college experience and think of how horrible it was. And if anyone has questions about anything,
