To all future college students

by Alexus Moreno

Being only a freshmen in college, I still have a lot of friends who are still in high school. Most of them are seniors who, much like me this time last year, are stressing about college applications, college essays and financial aid needs. I’m here to tell all you future bobcats and all you future college students not to stress … though that seems impossible, believe me when I tell you it will only make things worse.

Let me tell you what not to do. DON’T and I repeat DON’T wait until the last minute to take care of business. Waiting until the last minute to meet deadlines and finish those applications, essays, etc. will put you in a very messy situation and will probably make you cry and nobody is going to feel sorry for you, because it’s your own fault for procrastinating (I know that’s harsh but that’s the truth, ladies and gentlemen). December is usually the deadline for a lot of things, so if you are reading this I suggest you stop for a moment and write down all your deadlines on a very special piece of paper and then continue to read this.

College is very important, so make it your priority. Senior year is stressful enough with trying to graduate, prom, studying and figuring out what you want to do after you walk across that stage … it’s overwhelming. That’s why you need to get all your college stuff out of the way so you can enjoy the holidays and the rest of your senior year with no worries. Seriously, enjoy these last few months you have in high school and with all your friends, because soon that is going to change … college is a totally different experience (you’re gonna love it!).

Write those essays now … have teachers, friends or counselors read them and re-read them. Study for your test … it’ll make you less worried about if you are going to pass or not. Start your financial aid process. That way, come December, you’ll already be more than halfway done with it. Submit your college applications and keep a check-up on the status of it every once in a while.

Don’t make it hard on yourself … I know this is a huge transition in your life so don’t ruin it by stressing the whole way through. You’re are going to be okay and things are going to work out as long as you work hard and make things happen. After this semester, things are going to go by crazy fast. Soon you’ll be walking across that stage and high school will be one huge bittersweet memory … so live it up and enjoy.
