Family Weekend

by Victoria Nguyen

I hope everybody enjoyed this weekend just as much as I did. I love seeing people with their families, but I especially love being with mine. Family is the most, and I mean the most, important element of my life. Without them, I would be so dull, have no sense of humor, and I wouldn’t be nearly half the person I am today if they weren’t around to mold me. Last time I went home, I wasn’t able to see everyone and to my surprise they all made it up here last weekend to spend those precious few days with me.

Everything about my family is unconventional and everything we do always goes against the grain, but that’s the reason I love my crazy family so much. We aren’t afraid to do our own thing and no matter what we are doing, we are making the best out of it. We scrapped the traditional family weekend activities and ventured out on our own … no surprise there! As everyone around campus was preparing for the big game on Saturday, the Nguyen-Larios family was getting ready to explore the San Antonio Riverwalk. Obviously they didn’t drive all the way up here to not see the beautiful scenery so after a quick tour we headed out.

We didn’t have to check into our hotel until after 3PM so we decided to visit the incredible outlet mall just down the street. One thing my family knows how to do is shop. The kids definitely know how to spend money and we quite enjoy it as well. I finally got to go to Papaya, my favorite clothing store. They always have cute clothes and are in my opinion the most reasonably priced retailer out there. I picked up a few dresses that I absolutely adored and a cute top. Now that I’m starting to explore my girly side, I have found shopping more enjoyable.

Due to the unexpected temperature, everyone picked up a new jacket. Just a side note, every time my family comes up here the temperature drops by twenty degrees, hence the reason you’ll find a million hoodies in each of our closets. Regardless of the weather, we made an event out of the crowded shopping complex. I think my mom strategically steered me away from any shoe stores to keep me out of sight of my greatest temptress. I find myself to be growing sad because I left shoeless! Man, how I love shoes.

We ran out of money and found ourselves back on I-35 to San Antonio. We arrived at the Wyndham, the fanciest hotel I’ve ever stayed in, at about 5PM. After a couple of hours, we all trekked down the street to the Riverwalk to grab a bite to eat. We ate at the “famous” Rita’s, where most of us ate fajitas. We enjoyed some laughs and carried on well into the night. Eventually we all found our way back to our hotel rooms, where my cousins and I made our way down to the gym.

No one was working out, but we just needed a place to go and talk about teenage things without the presence of nosy adults. We mostly laughed about random things, but like always, serious topics snuck their way into the conversation. It’s truly moments like this that I live for. If I could spend every day like that moment, I would without a second thought. I love my family so much, I would give up anything and everything to see them happy.

Persistence from our parents finally got us back VictoriaFamilyto our rooms for the night. The next morning, we gathered up our things and checked out. The fun was captured in a perfect elevator selfie that my uncle was insisting we take the night before at dinner. Departing from the hotel, we made our way to a Mexican restaurant (I cannot remember the name of it at the moment) in downtown San Antonio. The food was delicious and the atmosphere was light. We finished off the afternoon with a bit of shopping and for my youngest cousin, a little mechanical bull riding. You know–the norm!

The weekend unfortunately came to a rather quick end. Everyone said their dreaded goodbyes and headed on home. I fell into my bed and was brought to tears by their departure. I love them and miss them every second of every day. The hardest part of being away from home is being away from the people I love the most. I look forward to seeing them again really soon and I just want to say I love you all very much!
